Berlin's gas street light - cultural heritage in danger

A number of cities, for example Dresden, have declared their gas street lighting a historic monument. In contrast, the Berlin Senate's preservation of gas street lighting is marginal at best. Only the external form of the gas lamps is protected by preservation order. Furthermore, this protection only applies to gas lamps found at historically significant places.

The Senate's Department of Urban Development currently plans to demolish Berlin's gas street lamps almost entirely. Traditional gas street lighting will merely be preserved at a few places of historic and tourist interest.
